Good player, but he has to improve his hands, and IMO he can move downfield a little better than James.

But they have to stop the 2-3 TE sets to make him matter.
"A second-round pick in 2013, McDonald had issues with injuries and drops during his tenure with the 49ers. He missed 16 games over four seasons, and his 15.8 drop percentage was worst among tight ends with at least 75 catchable targets since 2013, according to Pro Football Focus."
I guess I "sort of" get this trade since we're weak at TE, but a 4th round pick seems high for this guy unless I'm missing something. Questionable hands, injury problems and by my math, he's one of 5 TE's currently on our roster (none of whom are very good). How many below average TE's do we need?  Nerd
I could be wrong but I don't really see why we don't continue with Jesse James. Seems to be improving, still young, decent hands, good size, decent work ethic. Some of J.J. characteristics remind me of Heath.

Just my thoughts.

I think the expectation is that James will still be the starter. There was a Gerry Dulac chat today in which he said he thinks McDonald was brought in to pair with James in 2-TE sets, not replace him as the starter.

Swell.

The 4th round pick means little with us getting a 5th back. IMO it would be a matter of about 10 slots in the draft order.

AB/Eli/Bryant

1 TE

1 RB

Ben

And get out of their way.

Yep, I saw that after I posted (the 5th rounder). So it's really a wash.

I tend to agree. Keep your most talented players on the field. The multiple TE stuff has rarely been effective for us. More often than not, those formations seem to be drive-enders.
