I took a look at the stats for each over the last 2 years.  Kelly played 22 games, threw for 6800 yds with 503 completions out of 786 attempts for 64%.  He threw 50 TDs and 21 ints.  Yards per attempt were 8.65.

Dobbs played 26 games, threw for 5237 yds with 430 completions out of 701 attempts for 61%.  He threw 42 touchdowns and 17 ints.  Yards per attempt were 7.47.

Certainly there is more to the selection than these stats but I find it hard to understand how one rates a 4th round pick and the other is Mr. Irrelevant.  I doubt either will become a franchise QB but I sure would have rather had a CB or LB in the 4th and taken Kelly in the 7th.

Couldn't agree more.....I was hoping we'd pick up Kelly late in the draft....or even Peterman over Dobbs. That being said, this wasn't the year to draft a QB......

With this kid, I wouldn't go by just stats. I'm not sure what conference Kelly played, but the SEC is the best level of college ball in the land. Secondly, what the Steelers were intrigued with was Dobbs play in crunch time, and how to close out a game. Then finally, there is that brainiac thing. Smarts and hearts as they say.

OK, that's the how the Steelers see it. As for me, for QB, I would have kept the Zack Burgher, waited until next year for a better QB draft class, and looked for more DL help, like a McCullors type, that can actually play effectively and nasty.

That is the the one thing that is missing from this defense. A true A-B gap interior lineman that can collapse a pocket. If our O plays up to potential, that will be the only thing, besides injuries, that will keep us from hoisting the Big Stickey!

I wore my Steelers hat to lunch, yesterday. I fellow patron of the restaurant approached me and began blathering about how our boys finally drafed a real quarterback. He went on to state that Ben is the only thing holding Mike Tomlin back from becoming an all-time great coach. Afterward, I told Spoke what a pleasure it was to finally meet him in person.

Kelly played in the SEC West (Ole Miss). My belief is that's a tougher go than what Dobbs faced in the SEC East.

Bottom of the NFL? WTF are you talking about, Lake?  Scared

2016 Steelers
Offensive Rank: 10th in points, 7th in yards
Defensive Rank: 10th in points, 12 in yards

Top ten.  By a defense filled with veritable babies in the secondary. And in case you haven't noticed, the defense has been steadily improving over the last 3 years. Not yet what it once was... but these things take time. I expect a better team defensively this year as these young players, who gained experience last year, will improve again this year.

The reality is, the 2016 defense overachieved and the 2016 offense underachieved. There are reasons (injuries, suspensions, etc.).

Hopefully, this will be one of those years when it all gels for us.  Pi_clover

Great question DB ... but you're looking at it all wrong ...

The question is ... What has taken the Steelers defense all the way to the bottom of the NFL ??? ... and Why has it taken so long for the defense to make the turn ??? ... Seriously !!! ... answer it ...

The BETTER question is, how can the Steelers be totally void of any playoff wins from the beginning of the 2011 season through the end of the 2014 season and into the 2015 post-season ??? ... with Big Ben in his PEAK seasons as the franchise QB ... ???

That's (count them) FOUR STRAIGHT NFL SEASONS without a single playoff win ...

So the way I see it, you are the consummate "glass is half full" guy who credits the draft as being a success ... and the rest of us hard-core Steelers guys see the Tomlin years as the ULTIMATE WASTE of Big Ben's peak seasons as a franchise QB ...

Tomlin has what? ... ONE more Big Ben NFL season to redeem his coaching gifts? ... Do the Steelers have talent to win it all? ... Absolutely !!! Will they? ...

Read my signature ...

Again, a marvelous job of avoiding the question. How did we get to where we are from where we've been is the draft picks have been so bad? And, if the draft picks are really that bad, then that means we have had one whale of a coaching job. Which is it Lake?

The reason we were not picking defensive players 5 years ago was because were were investing in offensive players, like Bell, DeCastro Gilbert, and such. When you have a franchise QB getting clobbered running the pop gun O of BA to the tune of 40 + sacks a year, and you want him to be around a few more years, it made a whole lot of sense. Lately, we are filling those holes on D, with Dupree, Shazier, Davis, Burns, and Hargrave, with Watts and a couple of corners add this year.

Tim, I agree, the O really let us down in the playoffs. We got up on Miami early, but in the KC game, the warts began to show, and eventually folded the proverbial tent in Foxboro. As for the D, looks like we got some help on the way, but like last year, we are going to need the O to kick it up a notch until we get the newbies rockin'.

Lake,

Consider Tim's post, and the fact that we were missing our best defensive lineman, for most of the season, and our starting OLB for 3/4 of a season, finishing in the top ten, and the contributions by the rookies, that is a hell of a job by a much maligned coaching staff.

What excuse. It's a fact, our offense sucked in Foxboro, and wasn't much better in KC. What  a tacit excuse is not acknowledging it. It was our vaunted offense, shut out for over 2 full quarters in the AFCCG sunk the ship, and that is a fact.

I don't know, It depends on how many insults I get..... I've been trying my darnedest, and still haven't received one STFU. Even from Lake....

Anyway, things are good here in Richmond. Thanks to my last employer, I'm pretty much semi retired, but the Misses has about a year and a half to go. I think the last time we talked you had a little one brought into the world. They grow fast don't they?

I don't think our future QB is on the roster or will be on the roster this year. There's a kid from the Washington Huskies I hope the Steelers keep an eye on. Name's Jake Browning, perhaps an inch or 2 short, could keep him out of the top half of the 1st round next year.

There the first official 2018 mock draft wish/ prediction.

Lack of Height: Didn't effect Drew Brees much... Browning, Washington. Got it.
