Ho-hum, but we did need a TE with Tippy Toes gone and Bucky Hodges cut yesterday.

The Pittsburgh Steelers have selected Michigan tight end Zach Gentry in the fifth-round of the 2019 NFL Draft. It was the 141st pick overall in this year’s draft.

At this years scouting combine, Gentry measured in at 6081, 265-pounds with 34 1/8-inch arms and 9 1/2-inch hands. He ran his 40-yard dash in 4.90-seconds, did 12 reps on the bench and had a vertical jump of 29.5-inches to go along with a 9’2″ broad jump.

Gentry, who arrived at Michigan as a quarterback, caught 49 passes for 817 yards and 4 touchdowns during his college career. The Steelers had dinner with Gentry ahead of the Michigan pro day this year.

CAREER NOTES
Three-year letter winner at Michigan, playing in 33 games with 24 starts at tight end…recorded 49 catches for 817 yards and four touchdowns in his career…earned U-M Athletic Academic Achievement…switched to tight end from quarterback prior to sophomore season.

If he can get in way blocking, this is big upgrade over James. Good hands, and can actually put a move on somebody in the open field.

Watching film he reminds me of a poor man's Matt Spaeth. Needs to add 15 to 20 lbs. to his frame.

Wasn't the best of years for TE's. As long as Vanimal stay healthy no worries.

No way this guy is going to be an inline blocker. He can be a nice threat down the seams as a move TE however. Hand are good, has some moves, and definite height advantage when catching the ball.

I think vanimal has potential to be a good to great TE. He played 15 of 16 games last season, just missing the opener against the stains. Hopefully he can stay healthy next year as well. Remember the stiff arm he through on the CB that put on IR?

I like this guy, he brings a violent level to the offense.

McDonald is hardly the “Tomato Can” one of posters  called him when we first signed him. Frankly, the guy can play and was a great FA pick up.

But what I find really odd about his usage, he will get 4 or five passes early in the game in quick succession,  then zippo, they stop throwing to him

the tight end has hardly ever been a cog of the Steelers offense.  Even Heath Miller rarely had over 60 catches in his career.  There were only 4 years he broke 60 catches.  when you look at the number of tight ends that have had over 90 catches a year then you're getting into the area where a team uses the tight end.  Heath broke 70 twice barely.  So I don't think the TE has been a position the steelers look to for receptions like some teams.
