A true NT like a big snack or better.

Would it make all the worlds difference on defense? Seems like the d has not been stout since. I may be wrong but a bulldozer in the middle with skill on at least two downs would make all the worlds difference IMO.

We don't use a "true nose tackle" anymore.

I know that is why I asked. Defense has not been elite since a bulldozer with talent has been in the middle.

It's a position that is fading in the league now because it has become pass happy.

Kinda like the Fullback position is fading out.

Nether one of those potions will ever go away. Steelers need a big snack type player in middle if they are going to continue to run a 34. Like i said imo.

Quote:Sporting Charts explains Nose Tackle

The nose tackle is the anchor of a defensive line. Generally, the responsibility of the nose tackle is to clog up as much of the middle of the offensive line as possible to allow the other defensive players to make plays. Nose tackles tend not to make a large impact statistically due to the nature of the position, but they can have an enormous impact on the offense's ability to run the football if they can keep the offense from opening holes for the running back. Nose tackles are often double teamed by the offensive line in order to move them in a preferred direction depending on the play call.  https://www.sportingcharts.com/dictionar...ackle.aspx

Brady- 24-36 341 yards and 3 td's

Wilson- 29-35 300 yards and 3 td's

Just how much do you think a nose tackle would've helped? Besides, Jevon Hargrave is listed as our Nose tackle and he is no slouch. He only sees a handful of snaps because most of the time the defense is in pass defending packages.
Like I said, it's a pass happy league now. If Big Snack played today he would hardly see the field.

Comparing Hargrave to Big Snack is a understatement. I think the run defense and defense overall has not been elite since a player as good as hampton or Steed played in the middle. I never said the NT would be a three down lineman.

Its the scheme: one-gap penetrating D-linemen versus the old school two-gappers (Aaron Smith, Snack, Keisel...) who ate up blockers and clogged the running lanes so the linebackers were free to make the plays. I haven't liked this scheme since Tomlin started moving the D in this direction. Way to subject to cutbacks and guys being out of position leading to big plays against.

I agree with that statement. The Steelers are no longer feared on the defense.
