1984 Steelers 52 vs Chargers 24

Stallworth (7 rec, 116 yds, 3 TD) and Lipps (7 rec, 118 yds, 1 TD) are unstoppable and Mark Malone has perhaps his finest performance as a pro (18 of 22, 253 yds, 4 TDs, 1 rushing TD). The surprising Steelers absolutely steamroll the Chargers, whose hapless defense puts on perhaps the most pitiful performance I've ever seen. While the Steelers offense seems unstoppable behind the bruising running of Walter Abercrombie (19 att, 109 yds) and Frank Pollard (19 att, 79 yds, 2 TD), Mike Merriweather contributes a hat trick on defense by recovering a fumble, intercepting a pass and knocking Dan Fouts out of the game with a vicious sack. This game is even more lopsided than the final score indicates.

Maybe my favorite game from the 1984 season. When I was a kid at the time, I didn't know it was possible for a team to score over 50 points in a game. Looking back on it, I think the Chargers had a let down game after pulling off a huge upset over the Dolphins the week before. Steelers took full advantage of Charger turnovers in the rout. Fun game.

Sad to watch Jack Lambert be relegated to passing downs because he couldn't push off that foot to take on blockers.

Considering how bad that toe was it's unreal to think he went back into the Chiefs game later that same day.

He also played against the Rams two weeks later.

And what makes it even better, the November 25, 1984 matchup between the Steelers and Chargers, is from the videotape of WFMJ-TV 21, Youngstown, Ohio.

Dude, think of what an amazing find Anderson was! We went through the '82 preseason with the HORRIFIC Dave Trout. Strong leg, but couldn't kick extra points or field goals.  Laugh  Not a good recipe for a placekicker. Trout cost us multiple games in 1981, and he would've kept us out of the playoffs in '82... and then *BOOM!!!* Gary Anderson falls from the sky, cut by the Bills.

I was watching the '82 preseason game vs. Philly the other night, and Trout was just horrific. Man, preseason games were actually GOOD back then. I still can't get over how good the last quarter and a half of that game was. Think about it... preseason game #4 and Bradshaw is out there SLINGIN' it until the very end.  Rockon

Anyawy, the Steelers sign Anderson, cut gawd-awful Trout... and the rest is history.

So yeah... the 55 yard FG by Anderson in this game is off the hook.

P.S. -- Yes, Malone was horrid overall, despite this performance. I always liked him, though.
