What's the downside of signing Revis?

I don't get it.  It looks like he's committed to getting into shape.  In my view he would be invaluable in helping the other D-backs on the team.  He can still play.  He understands he's not going to get a ton of money so what's the problem?

The downside id Revis is older & would be a rental then retire after one season

My understanding is that the Jets are still footing the majority of his salary unless a team were to offer him more than $8M or so.
So it really boils down to what money he wants.
You could easily make the same argument for us re-signing DeAngelo Williams.
Colbert and company could be playing the waiting game with Revis to get him to agree to a minimal contract or just thinks he's washed up.
At any rate, I doubt we see much more traction in Free Agency until after the Draft.

I thought he'd have to be offered $8M for it to be worth his while.

At any rate, unless he just wants to come in at the minimum and play for a championship, I would generally agree with the above statement.

A couple of years back, he was a free agent and the Steelers were interested.
However, Revis and his agent (at the time) made it clear that he was more interested in a fat payday than contending for another Lombardi.

Now he can paint whatever pretty little fantasy he wants about coming home and playing in Pittsburgh to end out his career, but I don't think Colbert and company have forgotten where his priorities were back then.
Just a speculation.

I would have LOVED  to have upgraded from Mike Mitchell's sorry flea flicker biting arse with Eric Weddle.
He may have even provided the extra push we needed in the secondary last year.

Let's consult Giles' handy checklist for playing DB in Mike Tomlin's defense:

4) Gold tooth display? 
5) Dreads? 
6) Arrest record? 
7) Drug abuse? 
8) Level of violence that is brought to the game? 
9) Can't tackle?

Joking aside,
Who knows if/what he has left in the tank or if he could bounce back.
I suspect the Steelers will do what they've always done and find their talent in the draft.
Let's just hope we're done drafting 5'7" 170 lbs bench ornaments.

Assuming we are talking about the Tomlin era. True, that was a really good defense back then, comparatively speaking. That said, the offense then was rather painful to watch, comparatively speaking.

I love the offense then and now. What you're saying depends on the year. Pre-1978, I agree somewhat. But the O-line play of the '70s Steelers was incredible throughout the decade. INCREDIBLE. And in '78 & '79, the offense was explosive and exciting; the best in the NFL. Bradshaw's arm... just wow. So much talent (and depth) at every position. 

The thing that strikes me about the old days are the turnovers. Yes, it was an era of turnovers. But even for a time when all teams turned it over much more than today, the Steelers turned it over a flippin' TON. It's amazing how many games they won turning the ball over like that. The Steelers had 52 turnovers in '79 (plus a bunch more in the playoffs) and still won the Super Bowl!  In contrast, the 2016 Steelers suffered only 18 turnovers and it felt like a lot. 

The QB footwork was radically different then vs. now, too. Completely different way of dropping back, and generally such a deep drop.

No doubt the late 70's O was a joy to watch, thanks to the Mel Blount rule. But like I mentioned about the 2010+ team, the defense then was fading as the offense was getting much better.

As much as I loved the passing game we developed in the late 70's, and what we are seeing today, I still love the trapping style of offense. Something about linemen on the move making blocks in space, and Haley has brought a bit of it back. That Finney kid is going to be devastating when he gets the starting nod. This may be his year. Speaking of pulling, did you catch the block Foster made on Mosely on about the 4th or 5th play of the last Raven game? Absolutely hysterical. There was no way Mos;ey was expecting Foster to get to where he was as slow as he is..

Not surprisingly, I liked Erhardt's smash mouth running games too, with Daws, Love, Jackson, & Searcey.. That running game was almost unstoppable.

Interesting comment about the way the QBs are dropping today. I hadn't given that much thought Do you think it's because of they way they've been brought up, playing out of shotgun formations, that they don't have the same drop back skills like Bradshaw? Secondly, do you think using the pro-set formation with both running backs at equal depth, allowed for better blitz pick ups allowing for a deeper drop back?

I agree wit the footwork. i was impressed with the Blond Bombers speed dropping back into the pocket. Late 70's not many teams ran the shotgun, which was introduced by the Cowboys, Landry and Staubach. If I remember correctly the Steelers were the last NFL to incorproate it into their offense.

I also agree, the Steelers of the late 70's had a very potnet and exciting offense to watch.
