Steelers toying with fairly significant changes in secondary

Pittsburgh Steelers CB Artie Burns is in jeopardy of losing his starting role.

The Pittsburgh Steelers get starter Joe Haden back from a broken leg injury on Monday against the Houston Texans but it looks like that won’t be the only change in the Steelers secondary this week.

Rookie cornerback Cam Sutton took reps with the first-team at practice on Saturday morning, according to a report from Ray Fittipaldo of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. That left starter Artie Burns taking reps with the second team.

The second-year player from Miami who was a first-round pick at the 2016 NFL Draft addressed the apparent demotion afterward.

“I don’t know. We’ll have to wait until Monday,” Burns said when he was asked if coaches had told him anything about whether the practice reps would reflect their look Monday night at the game.

Sutton was a third-round pick at the 2017 NFL Draft after playing his college ball at Tennessee. He began the year on injured reserve with a hamstring injury but has since returned and has now played in three games, making his first career start against the New England Patriots in Week 15 with Haden out.

Now, with Haden back, Sutton still factors heavily into the team’s defensive plans and even if Burns is awarded the start it appears that Sutton will be cutting into his reps against the Texans.

Doesn't matter. We have the worst defensive scheme of all time. Took 39 points to beat baltimore. 39. Think about that for a second. Now think about this defense being on the field next year and Landry is the starting QB.
